United States Supreme Court West Facade Restoration

Materials Conservation (MC) served as the conservation subcontractor for the Architect of the Capitol for the United States Supreme Court West Facade Restoration project. The scope of MC’s work included laser cleaning and stone consolidation of the column capitals, pediment statuary, and ornamental detail in the cornices of the north and south wings.

After the masonry subcontractor completed the general cleaning of the stone, Materials Conservation used a portable Q-switched Nd:YAG laser to ablate heavy carbon deposits at the carved stone elements of the cornice, column capitals, and pediment. Using light, lasers are able to remove soiling and heavy encrustations on delicate and friable surfaces without damaging the substrate. After cleaning, MC consolidated the column capitals, pediment statuary, and lion heads in the cornice.
