Rodin Museum

As part of the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s plan to restore the Rodin Museum to its original 1929 design by Paul Cret and Jacques Gréber, Materials Conservation Co., LLC developed a minimally invasive conservation treatment program for the museum’s central galleries, library, octagonal galleries, and vestibules. Working in collaboration with the conservation department of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Materials Conservation interpreted the original design schemes, conserved, and restored all of the historic plaster, decorative finishes, wood finishes, and bronze windows.

Materials Conservation performed an extensive cleaning program to remove decades of soiling from the ornamental plasterwork and painted finishes in the central galleries. Damaged or discolored areas were consolidated, infilled, color-matched and reintegrated via inpainting. MCC also repainted the octagonal galleries, library, and vestibules to match original design schemes.

In the library, Materials Conservation stripped, cleaned, and refinished the wood paneling and floor. In damaged areas that required replacement pieces, conservators flawlessly integrated the new wood into the existing woodwork. The floor was carefully sanded to prevent unnecessary loss of original material.

To conserve the bronze windows, Materials Conservation cleaned, repatinated, and applied a protective clear coat to each window’s interior and exterior surfaces. Conservators also replaced broken panes and reglazed the windows.
